"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett

A first novel from Kathryn Stockett is the story of a young white privileged woman in Jackson Mississippi in the 1960s and a group of black maids. She writes about the struggles the woman face as they chafe against the written and unwritten rules that limit their lives.A download from the library:

I am from the south but not of the privileged class but my husband was and raised by a black women. She was loved very much and with the family in the home many years. My husband visited her until the end of her life. I talked to him about the book and he said never was there a question about her and the dishes she ate on or the use of the bathroom.

When he ask me to marry him , he took me to meet her before I ever meet his mother.

Many, many have loved this book and passed it around. I wish it didn't have the language. It could have been written without it.
